François Richer étudie les problèmes cognitifs associés au syndrome frontal, spécialement les troubles d’attention, et les troubles du contrôle volontaire de l’action. Ses présents travaux se penchent sur les troubles cognitifs dans la maladie de Huntington, les lésions cérébrales frontales et le syndrome de Tourette ainsi que l'imagerie cérébrale fonctionnelle des processus cognitifs.
